Harrington is an attractive residential, fishing and recreational village in NSW, located on the mouth of the Manning River 350km north of Sydney and 33 km north east of Taree. It was discovered by Surveyor Lieutenant John Oxley in 1818.
7km beyond Harrington is a charming fishing village of Crowdy Head with a headland that provides sightseers with a 360 degree view of the ocean, coastline, Crowdy Bay and the mountains. A light house was built on the headland in 1879 and still exists.
Harrington has a 3 km breakwater that stretches from the ocean into the river. It was constructed to deepen the entrance to the river and thereby assist with the navigation of coastal ships. Its construction was completed in the early 1990s. One of the many enjoyable walks is along the paved section of breakwater.
There are two hills within the original precinct of the village. One of these was the site of the facilities used by the Pilots who navigated the ships that traversed the river entrance. The graves of some of the Pilots and their families are still their overlooking the ocean and river entrance.Pilot Hill has a facility where visitors can read about and see pictures of its history.
Another attraction in the Harrington area is the Crowdy Bay National Park which runs along the coast combining beaches, sand dunes, coastal forest and swamps.
Harrington has all the normal facilities available for general living that can be acquired from the various businesses.
